Historic pub restaurant in York

"Ye Olde Starre Inne" in York, England, is a historic pub-restaurant that is considered one of the oldest licensed inns in the city, offering a fascinating connection to York's rich history. It was first mentioned in 1644 as "The Starre" and is now part of the Greene King chain, while retaining its traditional charm. The building, a listed timber-framed house from the 16th century with later extensions, is tucked away behind a alley marked by a distinctive sign above the street Stonegate – a sight that has attracted visitors since 1733. During the English Civil War, it served as a makeshift hospital and mortuary, adding a mysterious touch to its atmosphere. Today, it is a popular gathering spot for tourists and locals seeking traditional British cuisine and a cozy pub ambiance.

The menu at "Ye Olde Starre Inne" is heavily influenced by classic pub fare, with an emphasis on hearty, seasonal dishes. A particular favorite is the "Steak and Ale Pie," a robust meat pie with a rich beer sauce served in a crisp pastry shell, perfectly capturing British tradition. The "Sunday Roast," a Sunday highlight featuring tender roast beef, fluffy Yorkshire puddings, and a selection of vegetables drizzled with flavorful gravy, is equally beloved. For fish lovers, there is the hand-battered "Fish and Chips," with the fish deep-fried to golden perfection and served with thick chips – a dish that impresses with its simplicity and quality. Vegetarian options like a spiced vegetable curry provide variety, while the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" as a dessert, with its warm, caramel sweetness and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, delights guests.

Spending my childhood living in pubs, I love old traditional pubs. This one was everything I love in a pub. The staff were quick, attentive and polite. The decor and furniture are traditional and classy. The drinks are reasonable priced. The food was delicious and also well priced. A throughly enjoyable experience.

Beautiful little olde pub. Great spot to sit. DOG FRIENDLY indoors & outdoors. CHILD FRIENDLY. Nice choice of ales. Good outdoor seating availability. Chef special chicken burger in an IPA Batter was beautiful! The mature cheese on the burger was perfectly matched with the flavour profile and enhanced the umami. I wasn’t given a choice between fries or chunky chips which would have been nice. But overall very good!

Really poor service, 7 of us went to this place as we go to York at least a couple of times a year which also includes this establishment, me and my son had a certain lager which came out of the pump flat so told the barman who proceeded to empty a bit out of the top of the glass and pour a little more in….. still flat, we said it was poor so he decided to put the 2 lagers into 2 new glasses with the same result, we said we would have a different lager but he said he wouldn’t replace it with a different lager. The drinks here are expensive which you don’t mind paying for if it’s of good quality but to hand over flat lager is bad, we will not be going here again!

Visit this pub yesterday totally by chance. Just looking for something to eat with partner and child. Couldn't find many places with a kid menu, that my daughter would eat. Food was nice highly recommend the pie. Burgers not so great. My little one liked the sausage and mash. Didn't try beer as I was driving so it was soft drinks all round.
